We receive scraps, unwholesome food – Acting director of Ankaful Psychiatric hospital
The acting director of Ankaful psychiatric hospital, Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng has said individuals who donate food to psychiatric hospitals give unhealthy food.
He was speaking at the International Press Centre, on Monday 8th October, 2018, in Accra on the theme ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’.
He added that some mental health patients spend more than ten years in psychiatric hospitals without even being diagnosed of the actual cause of their illness.
‘Some people can come to the hospital for ten years and still not know their own diagnosis, they don’t know what the features are and the medications they may need’, he said.
Dr. Kwadwo Marfo indicated that to make the operations of psychiatric hospitals better all the relevant stakeholders must come onboard to ensure the successful delivery of mental health services in the country.
‘Most importantly this is not a purely mental health issue, beyond the initial treatment in the hospital we start talking about rehabilitation and reintegration, social welfare works start coming into play, district assemblies’ start coming into play’.
‘There are several agents and partners that we need to work with coherently… we need to change the mindset of the stakeholders also,’ he added.
This press launch is the initial activity that ushers in a host of other activities the ministry of health and the mental health authority have lined up to celebrate World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October 2018.
There will also be a lecture at the Osu Ebenezer Church hall on Wednesday, at 10am.
A brief check on the websites of the Ministry of Health and the Mental Health Authority by amibijay.com has no indication of the scheduled events. We will keep you posted when we get any information on the details of the schedules.
